This video discusses the reaction mechanism for the formation of benzoin using sodium cyanide and benzaldehyde. The cyanide ion attacks the carbonyl carbon atom forming a tetrahedral intermediate converting the aldehyde hydrogen into an acidic hydrogen whose conjugate base is resonance stabilized by the nitrile functional group. Deprotonation of the acidic hydrogen creates a carbanion nucleophilic intermediate which can react with the electrophilic carbonyl group of the other benzaldehyde molecule thus leading to the formation of benzoin.
